I'm only just starting to understand semi-colons. Every explanation I ever got, from teachers to books, was so mired down in Bill Cosby-esque grammar-speak (ya see, you puts the independsin clauses in with the jell-o puddin' pops, and separate it with an ah-gaaah) I could never figure it out.
Now I know that using a semi-colon makes the manuscript all sophisticated-like; I raise my pinky whenever I see one.
